Whether you got a new laptop or finally replaced that old desktop, the first hour of setup matters. A few simple steps now save you headaches down the road.

Run All the Updates First

Connect to WiFi and let Windows Update run. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. There will be a lot. Let them install, restart when prompted, and check again — it often takes two or three rounds.

Remove the Bloatware

New computers come loaded with software you didn't ask for — free antivirus trials, games, manufacturer utilities. Go to Settings → Apps → Installed Apps and uninstall anything you won't use.

Set Up Your Backup

Right now, while you're still setting up, is the best time to start. Plug in an external hard drive and turn on File History. Then sign up for a cloud backup service or make sure OneDrive is syncing your Documents folder.

Transfer Your Files

Copy your Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and Downloads folders from the old machine to an external drive, then paste them into the same locations on the new one.

Install What You Actually Need

Start with just the essentials: your browser, email client, and work software. Add things as you need them rather than cluttering a fresh system on day one.
