Summer Heat and Your Computer Equipment
Florida summers are hard on computers. Here's how to keep your equipment running when it's 95 degrees outside and your AC is working overtime.
Every summer we get a wave of calls that follow the same pattern: computer was working fine, then started randomly shutting down or freezing during the hottest part of the afternoon. Sometimes it won't turn back on until the next morning.
Heat is the enemy of electronics. CPUs and graphics cards are designed to run hot, but there's a limit. When a computer gets too warm, it either throttles performance to cool down or shuts off entirely to protect itself. In a Florida summer, that limit gets tested.
The Usual Culprits
Dust buildup. If you haven't cleaned inside your computer in a year or more, the fans and heatsinks are probably clogged. Dust acts like insulation — it traps heat instead of letting it dissipate. A can of compressed air and five minutes can make a real difference.
Poor airflow. Computers tucked inside closed cabinets, shoved against walls, or buried under papers can't breathe. The vents need clearance. If you can feel warm air blowing out the back, that's good — it means the heat is escaping. If the whole case feels hot to the touch, it's not.
Direct sunlight. A computer sitting in a sunbeam from a window can heat up fast, even if the room feels cool. Move it out of the direct light or close the blinds during peak sun hours.
AC struggles. Older buildings in Levy County often have AC systems that can't quite keep up with July. If your office hits 80+ degrees in the afternoon, your computers are feeling it too.
Warning Signs
- Fans running louder than usual, especially in the afternoon
- Random shutdowns or restarts with no error message
- Sluggish performance that gets worse as the day goes on
- The case feels unusually hot to the touch
- Blue screens that only happen when it's warm
What You Can Do
Clean the dust out. Shut down, unplug, and use compressed air to blow out the vents and fans. Do this outside if you can — the dust has to go somewhere.
Check placement. Make sure there's at least a few inches of clearance around all vents. Get it out of enclosed spaces and away from heat sources.
Consider a small fan. A cheap desk fan pointed at your computer can drop internal temperatures noticeably. Not elegant, but effective.
Watch the room temperature. If your office regularly climbs above 80 degrees, your equipment is working harder than it should be. A portable AC unit for the server closet or equipment area can prevent a lot of problems.
Check your UPS. If you have a battery backup, those don't like heat either. A UPS in a hot closet will have a shorter battery life and may not protect you when you need it.
When to Call
If you've cleaned out the dust and improved airflow but the shutdowns keep happening, there might be a deeper issue — thermal paste that's dried out, a fan that's failing, or a component that's on its way out. Those are worth getting checked before the heat finishes the job.
